TL;DR: The Electronics Engineer Licensure Examination is scored differently from most Philippine board exams. Section 16 of RA 9292 requires a passing rating of 70 percent in each subject — not a general weighted average. There is one safety net: a candidate rated below 70 but not lower than 60 in some subjects may take one removal examination on those subjects only, and failing the removal means failing the whole examination. Below 60 in any subject, and you sit everything again.
Introduction
The ECE board exam is administered by the Professional Regulation Commission through the Board of Electronics Engineering. Passing it makes you a Registered Electronics Engineer, qualified to practise in telecommunications, broadcast, semiconductors, instrumentation, computer systems and related fields.
The governing law is Republic Act No. 9292, the Electronics Engineering Law of 2004, which also created the separate Electronics Technician (ECT) licensure. RA 9292 sets a scoring rule that a surprising number of review guides describe incorrectly, and getting it wrong will make you review for the wrong exam.
The Scoring Rule, and Why It Changes Your Review
Most board exams in the Philippines are scored on a general weighted average with a per-subject floor, which lets a candidate bank marks in a strong subject to cover a weak one. The ECE examination does not work that way.

Two practical consequences follow, and they are the most useful things on this page:
- You cannot triage by subject weight. Whether a subject carries more or fewer items is close to irrelevant when every subject must independently reach 70. The review strategy of pouring time into the heaviest paper and coasting on the lightest is actively dangerous here.
- Your worst subject is your exam. Your result is decided by whichever paper you are weakest in. Diagnose it early and spend disproportionate time there — the opposite of the intuition most candidates arrive with.
Who Can Take the ECE Board Exam
You generally must be a Filipino citizen or a foreign national whose country grants reciprocity, be of good moral character, and hold a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering from a CHED-recognised institution.

Exam Coverage
Section 15 of RA 9292 sets the scope. The examination consists of written tests covering subjects prescribed by the Board, including at least:
- Mathematics
- Applied Sciences
- Engineering Economics
- Laws and Ethics
- Electronics
- Communications
- Computers
- Information and Communications Technology
The Board clusters these into the examination papers — commonly Mathematics, General Engineering and Applied Sciences (GEAS), Electronics, and Electronic Systems and Technologies (EST) — and RA 9292 expressly allows the Board to re-cluster, rearrange, modify, add to or exclude subjects with Commission approval. Take the current clustering and item allocation from the Board's published programme of examination rather than from any review-centre summary.
Schedule and Filing
PRC publishes the dates for every licensure examination in a single resolution covering the calendar year, released the preceding November. For 2026 that resolution places the Electronics Engineer examination in March and October, with the Electronics Technician examination scheduled immediately after each ECE sitting. Confirm both against prc.gov.ph before planning around them — PRC has moved and cancelled sittings before.
Filing runs through the Licensure Examination and Registration Information System (LERIS):
- Create or log in to your LERIS account and complete your profile.
- Upload an ID photo meeting PRC specifications.
- Select the Electronics Engineer examination, or the Electronics Technician examination, with your date and testing centre.
- Book an appointment for document verification where required.
- Pay the current fee through an accredited LERIS channel.
- Download your Notice of Admission and check your room and reporting time.

The ECT Examination
The Electronics Technician examination is a separate licensure created under RA 9292. The law provides that it consists of written and/or practical tests covering subjects the Board prescribes as specific to the practice of electronics technicians — a narrower scope than the full engineer examination, and one that may include a practical component the ECE paper does not.
Eligibility and coverage for the ECT are set by the Board and have been revised, so confirm the current rules with PRC rather than relying on how the exam worked in an earlier cycle.
Review Strategy That Fits the Scoring Rule
1. Diagnose before you plan
Sit a full diagnostic across all four papers before allocating a single study hour. Under a per-subject 70 rule, the paper you are worst at is the one that decides the result, and it is often not the one you expect.
2. Build mathematics first, then hold it
Mathematics underpins every other paper, and decay is fast. Establish it early, then keep it alive with short regular sessions rather than one intensive block.
3. Give the weak paper disproportionate time
This is counterintuitive and it is the whole game. Time spent lifting a 62 to a 72 is worth more than time spent lifting an 84 to a 90, because only one of those changes your result.
4. Solve problems relentlessly
The examination is computation-heavy. Volume under time pressure builds both accuracy and the pacing you need on the day.
5. Master communications topics
Modulation, antennas, transmission lines, fibre optics and wireless systems recur across administrations and are high yield within EST.
6. Simulate the full paper set
Weekly full-length timed papers in the final two months. Endurance across the whole examination is trainable and is not the same skill as subject knowledge.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Triaging by subject weight. Under a per-subject 70 requirement, this is the single most damaging planning error.
- Skipping the mathematics foundation and jumping to Electronics, which produces errors everywhere.
- Passive reading. This is a computation exam; reading solutions is not solving problems.
- An unfamiliar calculator on exam day. Practise on your exact model and bring a backup.
- Cramming in the final week instead of resting and doing light formula review.
Is a Review Center Worth It?
Engineering review centres supply curated problem sets, pacing across the papers, and drilling that is hard to replicate alone — worth it for many first-time takers.
