TL;DR: Senior High School no longer has four tracks and strands. DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026 (Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum) replaced them with two tracks — Academic and Technical-Professional (Tech-Pro, formerly TVL) — five core subjects taken in Grade 11 only at 160 hours each, and clusters of electives you pick from rather than a strand you are locked into. Grade 11 moved to the new curriculum in SY 2026-2027; Grade 12 in non-pilot schools finishes the 2016 curriculum first, with full implementation in SY 2027-2028.
What changed, and why most guides are wrong
If you have read anything about Senior High School written before mid-2026, it almost certainly describes four tracks (Academic, TVL, Sports, Arts and Design), the Academic Track split into STEM, ABM, HUMSS and GAS, and a long list of core subjects including Personal Development.
That structure is gone for Grade 11.
DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026, issued 4 June 2026 and signed by Secretary Sonny Angara, institutionalises the Strengthened Senior High School (SSHS) Curriculum. The order states DepEd's own diagnosis plainly: on full implementation in 2016 the curriculum proved "fragmented, congested, and offers limited flexibility." The SSHS Curriculum was piloted in SY 2025-2026 under DepEd Memorandum 048, s. 2025, and rolled out nationwide from SY 2026-2027 as announced in DepEd Memorandum No. 012, s. 2026.
The order amends DepEd Order No. 021, s. 2019 (Annex 2 on Secondary Education) and DepEd Order No. 030, s. 2017 on Work Immersion, and repeals anything inconsistent with it.
The two tracks
Academic Track
For learners whose intended exit is higher education. Instead of choosing a strand, you choose electives from five clusters:
- Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities
- Business and Entrepreneurship
- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
- Sports, Health, and Wellness
- Field Experience
Schools are not required to offer every elective in a cluster, and you are not confined to one cluster. This is the central difference from strands: clusters organise teachers and materials, they do not fence you in.
Technical-Professional (Tech-Pro) Track
Formerly the TVL Track. For learners aiming at employment, entrepreneurship, or middle-level skills development. It has ten clusters:
- Aesthetic, Wellness, and Human Care
- Agri-Fishery Business and Food Innovation
- Artisanry and Creative Enterprise
- Automotive and Small Engine Technologies
- Construction and Building Technologies
- Creative Arts and Design Technologies
- Hospitality and Tourism
- ICT Support and Computer Programming Technologies
- Industrial Technologies
- Maritime
Every Tech-Pro elective is aligned with a TESDA Training Regulation, and each has been standardised to 320 hours. Schools offering them must have teachers or trainers holding a valid National Certificate matching the qualification taught.
Where the Sports and Arts tracks went
They were folded in. Sports content now sits in the Academic Track's Sports, Health, and Wellness cluster and in the In-Campus Field Exposure for Sports elective. Arts content sits in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities cluster and in Arts Apprenticeship under Field Experience, which covers Dance, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Music, Theater Arts, Traditional Cultural Expressions and Visual Arts.
The five core subjects
All Core Subjects are taken in Grade 11 only, at 160 instructional hours each across the school year. None are offered in Grade 12. They were developed with the Technical Panel for General Education of CHED and map onto General Education subjects under CHED Memorandum Order No. 020, s. 2013:

Personal Development, Earth and Life Science, Physical Science, Oral Communication, Reading and Writing, 21st Century Literature, Contemporary Philippine Arts, Media and Information Literacy, and the rest of the old sixteen-subject core list are no longer core subjects.
Cross-tracking
The SSHS Curriculum keeps a version of the old doorway option, now called the cross-track option. Academic Track learners may take one Tech-Pro elective. Tech-Pro Track learners may take four Academic electives in Grade 12. Both are subject to school capacity and guidance mechanisms, so ask the school what it can actually timetable before you count on it.
Work Immersion and Field Experience
Work Immersion is a Grade 12 component running 320 to 640 hours, deliverable in one term (320 hours) or across two terms (540 or 640 hours), with consultation periods built in for mentoring and monitoring.
- Tech-Pro Track: mandatory.
- Academic Track: optional, available as a 320-hour elective in the Field Experience cluster.
The other Field Experience electives are Arts Apprenticeship (160 hours), Design and Innovation (80), Research 1 (80), Research 2 (80), In-Campus Field Exposure for Sports (160) and Field Exposure Off Campus (80). DepEd has said a separate order will give the detailed guidelines on Work Immersion, Field Exposure and Arts Apprenticeship.

Schools that cannot comply because of enrolment pressure or facility limits may run larger classes, but the order requires them to adopt instructional and management strategies to protect quality. A school head may also authorise additional sections. If you are comparing schools, this is a fair question to ask at the open house.
Which curriculum will you actually be taught?
This is the part that trips up families in SY 2026-2027, because two curricula are running at once.

Non-pilot Grade 12 classes in SY 2026-2027 continue on the 2016 curriculum focused on the Most Essential Learning Competencies, with TVL following the 2016 specialisations. So a Grade 12 learner this year is still in a strand; a Grade 11 learner is not.
Public schools also moved to a three-term school calendar from SY 2026-2027 under DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2026. Private schools are encouraged to adopt it but may keep a two-semester calendar, provided the prescribed instructional hours for Core Subjects and Electives are met in full.
Enrolling: dates, documents, money
Early registration and the enrolment window
Under DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2025 (Revised Basic Education Enrollment Policy), which repealed DepEd Order No. 03, s. 2018:
- Early registration for incoming Grade 11 runs from the last Saturday of January to the last Friday of February each year, or on a schedule DepEd sets. Divisions may extend it.
- Early registration is a projection exercise. It does not guarantee enrolment.
- The enrolment period is conducted one week before the official opening of classes, or as directed.
- Documents shown at early registration are for verification only and are not collected.
- No voluntary fees may be collected during early registration or enrolment as a prerequisite in public schools, per DepEd Order No. 19, s. 2008. Enrolment forms are not for sale.
Minimum documents for Grade 11
The order's minimum for Grade 11 entry is short:
- Grade 10 SF 9 (Report Card) — or a PEPT / ALS A&E Certificate of Rating or PPA Certificate if you came through those routes
- PSA or NSO birth certificate — submitted once for your entire stay in basic education. If it is not yet available, a secondary document (National ID or other primary government ID, Certificate of Live Birth, PhilHealth ID, PWD ID, barangay certification, baptismal certificate, or an affidavit of undertaking by parents) may be submitted until 31 October of the current school year.
Certificates of good moral character, 2x2 photos and entrance exam results are common school-level requirements. They are not DepEd minimums, and a public school cannot refuse you for lacking them.
The Senior High School Voucher Program
The SHS Voucher Program subsidises Grade 11 and 12 at participating private schools. DepEd Order No. 011, s. 2026 (Revised E-GASTPE Guidelines) sets the maximum amounts per beneficiary per school year:

Two details matter. First, the school is paid the lower of its total school fees or the maximum voucher amount — the voucher is not a cash grant to you, and it does not create change if the school charges less. Second, Categories A to D are priority applicants processed through the participating school itself during enrolment; Category E applies online through the Online Voucher Application Portal and is processed only after the priority categories.

How to choose, now that strands are gone
The old advice — pick the strand that matches your college course — no longer maps onto the structure. The order organises everything around curriculum exits: higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, and middle-level skills development. Work backwards from the exit.
- Name the exit first. If it is a degree, you are Academic Track. If it is a job, a trade, or a business, Tech-Pro is built for that and carries the National Certificate.
- Then check what the school actually offers. Clusters are an organising label. A school with an STEM cluster on paper may only run two of its electives. Ask for the list of electives it will timetable next year, not the cluster names.
- Ask whether cross-tracking is real there. One Tech-Pro elective for an Academic learner is genuinely useful, but only if the school can schedule it.
- Check teacher certification for Tech-Pro. The order requires a valid, current National Certificate matching the elective. It is a fair question to ask, and a school with certified trainers will answer it happily.
- Ask about Work Immersion partners. For Tech-Pro learners this is 320 to 640 hours of your Grade 12. Where those hours are spent matters more than the school's brochure.
A note for anyone told that a track closes doors: graduates of either track may apply to college. Some programmes will want specific electives or bridging work, which is a reason to ask the university early, not a reason to avoid Tech-Pro.
