TL;DR: Practical Research 2 is DepEd's quantitative research subject: Grade 12, first semester, 80 hours, an Applied Track subject taken by learners in every track, with Statistics and Probability as its listed prerequisite. Six content areas take a learner from the nature of quantitative inquiry through to a written report, and the guide caps the statistics explicitly at bivariate analysis. It is now outgoing. DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026 lists no Practical Research 2; the nearest equivalent is an Academic Elective called Research 2 in the Field Experience cluster, 80 hours, with Research 1 rather than Statistics and Probability as its prerequisite. Grade 12 learners not in pilot schools stay on the old curriculum for SY 2026-2027.
Practical Research 2 is the harder of the two research subjects, and the reason is not the writing. It is that a Grade 12 learner is expected to build a measuring instrument, establish that it is valid and reliable, collect data with it, and then run statistical tests on the results, all inside one semester. The subject assumes a specific piece of prior learning, and learners who arrive without it struggle in the second half rather than the first.

What Is Practical Research 2?
Practical Research 2 is the quantitative research subject of the K to 12 Senior High School programme. The DepEd curriculum guide gives the common subject description in one line: "This course develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills through quantitative research." The guide is dated December 2013 and is headed "K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum, Senior High School — Applied Track Subject".

The prerequisite is the detail worth reading twice. It is printed on the cover page of the curriculum guide, and it is not decorative. Two of the subject's competencies require learners to plan data analysis using statistics and hypothesis testing, and to use statistical techniques to analyse data. A learner who has not taken Statistics and Probability cannot meet those competencies, which is why schools sequence the two subjects deliberately.
What Are the Six Content Areas?
Practical Research 2 has six content areas against Practical Research 1's eight, but it is the denser subject, because the extra work sits inside the areas rather than beside them.

How Is It Different From Practical Research 1?
Beyond the obvious method split, four requirements appear in Practical Research 2 that have no counterpart in Practical Research 1:
- A conceptual framework. Content area 3 requires learners to formulate it clearly, illustrate and explain it, and present it alongside the review of related literature.
- Defined terms. The guide lists "defines terms used in study" as a discrete competency.
- Hypotheses, where appropriate. Listed as a competency with the qualifier attached, which matters: a purely descriptive quantitative study does not need one, and inventing a hypothesis to fill a template is a standard panel complaint.
- A constructed and tested instrument. Practical Research 1 asks learners to plan data collection procedures. Practical Research 2 asks them to construct an instrument and establish its validity and reliability. That is a different order of work, and it usually means content validation by teachers plus a pilot test.
Content area 5 also carries a requirement that is easy to skip: present and interpret data in tabular and graphical forms. Tables and graphs are not decoration for the appendix; they are part of the assessed competency.

How Much Statistics Does the Subject Actually Require?
Less than most learners fear, and the curriculum guide is unusually explicit about the ceiling. The competency reads: "uses statistical techniques to analyze data — study of differences and relationships limited for bivariate analysis."
Bivariate means two variables considered at a time. So the subject covers tests of difference and tests of relationship between two variables. Multivariate techniques, multiple regression among them, are outside the stated scope of Practical Research 2. That single clause is worth showing to anyone who insists a Senior High research paper needs advanced modelling.

Which specific test applies depends on your data type and your assumptions, and choosing it is a Statistics and Probability skill rather than a Practical Research 2 one. The table is a map of the territory, not a decision rule. Confirm your treatment with your research teacher before you run anything, and state the chosen test in your methodology rather than deciding it after you see the results.

Is Practical Research 2 Still Part of the Curriculum?
Not under the new structure, though most current Grade 12 learners will still take it.
DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2026, "Strengthened Senior High School Curriculum", issued 4 June 2026, amends DepEd Order No. 021, s. 2019 (Policy Guidelines on the K to 12 Basic Education Program), specifically Annex 2 on Secondary Education, along with DO 030, s. 2017 on Work Immersion. Under it there is no Applied Track and no subject titled Practical Research 2. Core subjects are reduced to five mandatory subjects taken in Grade 11 by all learners, with everything else structured as electives inside two tracks, Academic and Technical-Professional.
Annex A of the order lists, in the Academic Track's Field Experience cluster:

Two things follow from what Annex A says, and one from what it does not. It says the hours stayed at 80 and that Research 2 is gated behind Research 1 rather than behind Statistics and Probability, which is a real change in what the subject can assume its learners already know. It does not say what either elective contains: DO 017 lists elective titles, hours, grade levels and prerequisites, and DepEd issues curriculum guides for electives separately. Do not assume Research 2 is Practical Research 2 renamed until a curriculum guide for it says so.
Who Is Affected, and When?

DO 017 sets the phasing as Grade 11 in SY 2026-2027 and Grade 12 in SY 2027-2028, and states that Grade 12 learners in SY 2026-2027 who are not enrolled in pilot schools continue on the 2016 K to 12 Senior High School curriculum. So a Grade 12 learner this school year who completed Practical Research 1 in Grade 11 takes Practical Research 2 as scheduled. How to Get Through the Semester
The bottleneck in Practical Research 2 is not the writing and it is not the statistics. It is the instrument.
- Draft the instrument by the third or fourth week. Everything downstream waits on it, and validation plus a pilot test takes real calendar time.
- Validate before you distribute. Content validation by subject teachers, then a pilot test on respondents who will not be in the final sample. Record what you changed after the pilot; panels ask.
- Fix the statistical treatment in the methodology, not after data collection. Choosing the test once you have seen the results is the fastest route to a panel objection.
- Do not build hypotheses you do not need. The curriculum guide qualifies the hypothesis competency with "if appropriate" for a reason.
- Report tables and graphs as required output, with each one answering a specific research question in the same order the questions were asked.
- Keep the title, questions and framework consistent. A title claiming a relationship a framework does not contain is the drift panels catch first, which is why the research title guide treats the title as a summary of the problem rather than a separate exercise.
