University of the Philippines Manila

University of the Philippines Manila (UP Manila) is the health sciences center of the University of the Philippines System and the birthplace of the UP system as a whole. Its oldest unit, the College of Medicine, traces back to the Philippine Medical School, established by the Second Philippine Commission's Act 1415 on December 1, 1905, and integrated into the newly created University of the Philippines in 1910. The Padre Faura campus in Ermita, Manila became an autonomous constituent university of the UP System in 1977 and was formally renamed UP Manila in 1982. It comprises nine degree-granting units: the Colleges of Allied Medical Professions, Arts and Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health, the National Teacher Training Center for the Health Professions, and the School of Health Sciences, together offering 19 undergraduate, 33 master's, and 8 doctoral programs. As a state university operating under RA 9500, qualified undergraduates receive free tuition under RA 10931. UP Manila operates the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), the country's national university hospital and largest tertiary teaching and training hospital, and the National Institutes of Health, its center for health research established in 1996. Its licensure examination passing rates in medicine, nursing, dentistry, and pharmacy are consistently among the highest in the Philippines.
