University of the Philippines Cebu (UP Cebu) traces its origin to May 3, 1918, when it opened as the Junior College of Liberal Arts on land donated by the Cebu provincial government. It gained autonomous status within the UP System in 2010 and became the system's eighth constituent university on October 27, 2016. The Lahug campus, on Gorordo Avenue, sits on roughly 12 hectares and houses the College of Communication, Art, and Design; the School of Management; the College of Science; and the College of Social Sciences, alongside UP Cebu High School. Graduate programs, including a Master of Business Administration, Master of Science in Computer Science, Master of Education, and Master of Science in Environmental Science, are offered through UP Professional Schools at the South Road Properties campus. As a state university, undergraduate tuition is free for qualified Filipino students under RA 10931. Admission to UP Cebu is highly selective and requires passing the University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT). The university serves close to 2,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and is known as the premier public university option in Cebu for students who cannot get into UP Diliman.
