TVL is one of DepEd's four Senior High School tracks, alongside Academic (STEM, ABM, HUMSS, GAS), Sports, and Arts and Design. Unlike the Academic Track, which prepares students broadly for college entrance exams, TVL's specialized subjects are developed jointly by DepEd and TESDA, meaning the curriculum maps directly onto a specific competency standard rather than a general subject area.

Home Economics (HE): What It Covers
Home Economics is the largest and most varied TVL strand, spanning food and beverage (Cookery, Bread and Pastry Production, Bartending), tourism and hospitality (Housekeeping, Front Office Services, Tourism Promotion Services), personal care (Hairdressing, Barbering, Beauty Care/Nail Care), garments (Dressmaking, Tailoring), and caregiving. Most specializations lead to NC II, with a few, like Commercial Cooking and Fashion Design, leading to NC III after the related NC II is complete.
HE is also the strand with the clearest overseas pathway, particularly through Caregiving NC II, though destination countries generally require more than the Philippine NC II alone; Israel's government-to-government hiring scheme accepts it alongside its own screening requirements, while Japan's Specified Skilled Worker visa requires passing Japan's own language and skills exams on top of it. ICT: What It Covers
ICT trains students in hands-on computing rather than pure theory: Computer Systems Servicing (640 hours, NC II), three Computer Programming specializations in .Net, Java, and Oracle Database (320 hours each, NC III), Contact Center Services (NC II), and multimedia specializations like Animation and Illustration (NC II). Computer Systems Servicing is the most widely offered specialization since it requires no prerequisite.
ICT prepares students well for BS Information Technology, which shares its applied, systems-focused approach, but less directly for BS Computer Science, which leans on Calculus and discrete math that STEM covers and TVL-ICT generally does not. Agri-Fishery Arts (AFA): What It Covers
Agri-Fishery Arts is built around agriculture and fishery sectors: cultivating crops and raising animals for food and other products, plus raising, harvesting, and capturing aquatic resources. Per DepEd's curriculum documentation, AFA specializations include Agricultural Crops Production (NC I, then NC II, then NC III), Animal Production in poultry, swine, or large ruminants (320 hours, NC II), Aquaculture (640 hours, NC II), Food Processing (640 hours, NC II), Fish Capture (640 hours, NC II), Organic Agriculture (NC II), Horticulture (NC III), and Animal Health Care Management (NC III).
AFA is the least urban-skewed TVL strand, and it's the natural fit for students from farming or fishing communities who want a credential that matches the family or regional industry directly, or for students aiming at agriculture-related college courses like BS Agriculture, BS Fisheries, or BS Agribusiness later.

Do TVL Students Actually Get a TESDA Certificate?
Only if they pass a TESDA competency assessment, not automatically at graduation, in any of the four strands. Finishing the specialization's training hours qualifies a student to sit for the assessment; it does not hand over the National Certificate by itself. Schools typically coordinate the assessment through a TESDA-accredited assessment center, sometimes on campus, and there is usually a separate assessment fee involved.
A National Certificate covers every competency unit in a qualification. A student who passes only some units can instead receive a Certificate of Competency (COC), covering just those units, with the option to complete the rest later. Can TVL Graduates Go to College?
Yes, without restriction on which course. Under CHED Memorandum Order No. 105, s. 2017, "Policy on the Admission of Senior High School Graduates to the Higher Education Institutions," Grade 12 graduates of any track or strand are eligible to apply for admission to any bachelor's degree program at any higher education institution, provided they pass that school's own entrance exam or admission requirements. TVL does not carry any special restriction that STEM, ABM, HUMSS, or GAS graduates don't also face.
In practice, TVL graduates most often continue into degrees that build directly on their specialization: HE graduates into Hospitality Management, Tourism Management, or Culinary Arts; ICT graduates into BS Information Technology; IA graduates into engineering technology or industrial engineering programs; AFA graduates into BS Agriculture, Fisheries, or Agribusiness. A student switching further afield, say an IA graduate applying to BS Nursing, may need bridging or remedial coursework in subjects their strand didn't cover, the same adjustment any strand-mismatched student would face.

What Do TVL Graduates Actually Earn and How Easily Do They Find Work?
TESDA's own 2024 Study on Employment of TVET Graduates (SETG), based on a survey of 6,344 graduates conducted October 2024-January 2025, recorded an 83.34% overall employment rate, with female graduates at 85.67% and male graduates at 81.23%. Central Luzon, CALABARZON, and Northern Mindanao posted the highest regional employment rates in that same cohort, at roughly 88-90%.

TVL vs. the Academic Track: The Real Trade-Off
TVL's trade-off against STEM, ABM, HUMSS, or GAS is about timing and depth, not which is "better." A TVL graduate with a completed NC can be earning within weeks of Grade 12; an Academic Track graduate is still three to five years from a diploma, plus a board exam in licensed fields. What TVL trades away is breadth: it commits a student to one strand and specific specializations, while Academic Track strands keep more college courses open without bridging work.
Neither path forecloses the other. A TVL graduate can still go to college later, often into a degree that extends their NC directly. An Academic Track graduate can also pursue a TESDA credential separately through TESDA's regular training centers, just without TVL's built-in school-year structure.
How to Decide If TVL Is Right for You
- Pick the strand that matches a job you'd actually want, not the one your school happens to offer most visibly. The NC you work toward should point at a career you're genuinely willing to start in, at least as an entry point.
- Confirm which specific specializations and assessments your school runs. A TVL section without an active TESDA assessment partnership gives you the coursework but not the certificate; ask before enrolling, not after.
- Budget for the assessment fee separately from tuition. Passing the subject and passing the TESDA assessment are two different milestones, and the second usually carries its own cost.
