TL;DR: A research abstract is a single-paragraph summary that makes five moves: problem, method, results, conclusion, recommendation. APA Style puts it at about 250 words and one paragraph; the UPLB College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology manuscript guidelines cap a thesis abstract at 250 words in third person and an executive summary at 350; other Philippine schools set their own figures. DepEd's Practical Research 1 and 2 curriculum guides do not list "writes an abstract" as a competency at all, so if your Senior High teacher wants one, it comes from your school's research manual. Write it last, after the final chapter is done.
The abstract is the shortest part of a research paper and the part most people read. It is the piece that appears in a library catalogue, in a database index, and on the panel's copy of your manuscript when they have five minutes before your defence. Get it wrong and a good study reads as a vague one.
This guide sets out what an abstract has to contain, what the actual Philippine and APA sources say about length and format (they do not agree, and the disagreement matters), and then works through an annotated example line by line. The example is constructed for this guide and is clearly labelled as such. It is not a real study, and you should not cite it.
What Are the Parts of a Research Abstract?
An abstract makes five moves in a fixed order: the problem, the method, the results, the conclusion, and the recommendation. The University of the Philippines College of Science Style and Format Manual describes the abstract as a succinct account of the thesis containing a statement of the problem, the procedures or methods used, the results, and the conclusions. APA Style describes the same shape, saying an abstract addresses purpose, method, results and conclusions in a single paragraph.

The shares are a working guide, not a rule. The important thing is that results get the largest block. An abstract that spends 150 words on background and 20 on findings is the single most common weak pattern, and it is the one a panel notices first.
How Long Should an Abstract Be, and Who Decides?
Your department manual decides. There is no national standard, and the three most-cited authorities give three different answers, which is exactly why students get conflicting instructions.

Note what the UPLB guidelines add on top of the word count: the abstract page opens with a formatted line giving the author's name in surname-first uppercase, the college, the university, the month and year of submission, and the title, followed three spaces down by the major adviser's name. That is a local convention with no equivalent in APA Style, and a paper that skips it gets returned by the format checker regardless of how good the writing is.
Disclaimer: manuscript formats are revised periodically and vary between colleges within the same university. Get the current manual from your own department or research office before you format anything, rather than relying on any summary, including this one.
Does DepEd Require an Abstract in Senior High Research?
Not as a named competency, which surprises most Senior High students. The DepEd curriculum guides for Practical Research 1 and Practical Research 2 list competencies including presenting a written research report, listing references, drawing conclusions and formulating recommendations. Neither guide lists writing an abstract.
The nearest thing DepEd does specify sits in a different subject. The curriculum guide for English for Academic and Professional Purposes includes the competency "writes a precis/abstract/summary of texts in the various disciplines" under Reading Academic Texts. That competency is about summarising somebody else's text, not your own study, but it is where most Senior High learners meet the form for the first time.
So if your Practical Research teacher requires an abstract, the requirement is coming from your school's research manual or from the teacher's own template, not from the national curriculum guide. That is perfectly legitimate. It just means the rules on length and format are local, and you should ask for them in writing rather than searching for a national standard that does not exist.
A Worked Abstract, Annotated
The study described below does not exist. It is a constructed illustration written for this guide so you can see the five moves in sequence with realistic-looking numbers. Do not cite it, do not reuse the figures, and do not treat it as evidence about anything. Real abstracts report real data; this one exists only to show the shape.
Abstract (illustrative example)
Senior High School learners in the Academic Track are expected to complete a research output within a single semester, yet little is documented about how they allocate the time available to them. [1] This study described the time-allocation patterns of Grade 12 Academic Track learners during a one-semester research subject and examined whether those patterns differed by the type of research design chosen. [2] A descriptive-comparative design was used. Ninety-four Grade 12 learners from three public senior high schools in one city division completed a researcher-made time-log instrument over twelve weeks, validated by three research teachers and pilot-tested on twenty learners not included in the final sample. Data were analysed using weighted means and an independent-samples t-test. [3] Learners reported spending the largest share of their logged research hours on data gathering and the smallest share on revision. Learners who chose a qualitative design logged more hours on data gathering than those who chose a quantitative design, and the difference was statistically significant at the 0.05 level. [4] The findings indicate that revision, the stage most associated with manuscript quality, receives the least time under a one-semester schedule, and that qualitative designs carry a heavier data-gathering load than the schedule assumes. [5] It is recommended that research teachers build protected revision time into the course calendar and that design choice be settled early enough for data gathering to be scheduled realistically.
Now the annotations.
[1] The problem, in one sentence. It names a gap ("little is documented") rather than opening with a definition of research. Notice there is no citation. An abstract has to stand on its own in a database record where your reference list is not visible.
[2] The purpose, stated as what the study did. Past tense, active, and specific enough that a reader can tell what would count as an answer. "Aims to determine the effect of various factors" would fail this test; "described the time-allocation patterns and examined whether those patterns differed by design type" passes it.
[3] The method, compressed but complete. Design, sample size and source, instrument, how the instrument was validated, and the statistical treatment. Four sentences of your paper's Chapter 3 collapsed into two. A panel reads this block to decide whether to trust the results block that follows, so validation and sample details earn their space here even under a tight word limit.
[4] The results, with direction and significance. The findings are stated as findings, not as "the results are presented in Table 4." If you have a significance level, give it. If your study is qualitative, name the themes instead of reporting numbers. What you must not do is defer: an abstract that says results "will be discussed" has wasted its most valuable block.
[5] Conclusion, then recommendation, kept apart. The conclusion interprets ("revision receives the least time"); the recommendation says what someone should now do about it. Collapsing the two is a frequent panel comment, because a recommendation with no stated conclusion behind it reads as an opinion.
The illustrative abstract runs to roughly 240 words, which is inside both the APA 250-word guidance and the UPLB CEAT thesis limit. When you draft yours, count the words before you count anything else.
Why Abstracts Get Sent Back
These are the recurring reasons, in rough order of how often panels raise them:
- No results. The abstract summarises Chapters 1 to 3 and stops. This happens when the abstract is drafted before the data are in and never revisited.
- Background creep. Two or three sentences of general context before the problem appears. Cut to one sentence, or none.
- Method with no numbers. "Survey questionnaires were distributed to respondents" tells a reader nothing. How many, selected how, analysed how.
- Mismatch with the paper. The abstract names three research questions and the paper answers four, or the abstract reports a finding the paper does not contain. Panels check this directly.
- Citations and tables inside the abstract. Both break the stand-alone rule almost everywhere.
- Over the word limit. A format checker will bounce it before a reader ever sees it.
- Verb tense drift. Method and results are reported in the past tense because they already happened; conclusions can take the present.
How to Draft One in Five Passes
- Finish the paper first. Then open a blank page beside your final chapter, not inside the manuscript.
- Write one sentence per move. Problem, purpose, method, results, conclusion, recommendation. Six sentences, no editing yet.
- Add the numbers. Sample size, instrument, statistical test, the actual finding with its direction and, where relevant, its significance level.
- Cut to the limit. Delete background first, then adjectives, then any sentence that describes the paper rather than the study ("this paper is divided into five chapters").
- Check every claim against the chapter it came from. Each sentence in the abstract should be traceable to a specific section. If you cannot point at the source, it does not belong.
Once the abstract is settled it becomes a useful consistency check for the rest of the manuscript. If the abstract's research questions do not match your statement of the problem, or its conclusions do not trace back to the results in Chapter 4, the problem is in the paper and not in the abstract. Related Sections You Will Need
An abstract is downstream of nearly every other part of the paper, so it tends to expose weaknesses upstream:
- If your purpose sentence is hard to write, the problem is usually the statement of the problem.
- If the method sentence will not compress, it is often because the design was never clearly named. Start with qualitative vs quantitative research.
- If you cannot say who benefits in the recommendation, revisit your significance of the study section, which is where the beneficiaries were named in the first place.
