TL;DR: BS Data Science is a real and growing Philippine degree, but it does not have its own CHED memorandum order. No Policies, Standards and Guidelines CMO for BS Data Science appears on CHED's published memorandum order listings, which means there is no nationally prescribed curriculum, no national unit count, and no common core. Each programme is the school's own design, running on the authority CHED granted that school. There is no board exam: Data Science is not among PRC's 46 Professional Regulatory Boards. That combination makes comparing programmes harder than for BSCS or BSIT, and it is why this guide spends more time on how to evaluate a programme than on describing one.
The Thing Nobody Tells You First
For most Philippine degrees, you can look up a CHED memorandum order and see exactly what the programme must contain. BS Computer Science, BS Information Systems and BS Information Technology are all governed by CMO No. 25, series of 2015, which sets a 146-unit minimum, six shared common courses and prescribed internship hours. BS Statistics has CMO No. 42, series of 2017.
Data Science does not have an equivalent. CHED's own memorandum order listings do not show a PSG for the programme, so there is no floor to compare a school's curriculum against and no guarantee that two BS Data Science degrees from two schools cover similar ground.
This is not a warning against the degree. It is a warning against assuming. Before enrolling anywhere, ask the school for the CHED authority covering that specific programme, and ask for the curriculum checklist, not the marketing page. Our guide to CHED-accredited schools explains how programme authority works.
Does BS Data Science Have a Board Exam?
No. PRC administers 46 Professional Regulatory Boards. Data Science is not one of them, and neither is Computer Science, Information Systems nor Information Technology. There is no licensure examination for data scientists, no professional identification card, and no legal restriction on who may do the work.
The consequence is the same as in the rest of computing: nothing external certifies you at graduation. Your thesis or capstone, your practicum placement, and whatever you have actually built and can explain are the credentials. See our courses with board exams roundup for the degrees that do end in a PRC licence.
What a BS Data Science Curriculum Contains
Since there is no national template, the honest way to answer this is to look at what a school actually publishes.
De La Salle University publishes a Bachelor of Science in Data Science delivered as a reverse 2+2 programme, two years in Laguna and two in Manila, describing it as an interdisciplinary programme developing foundational skills in computing, data engineering, data governance, artificial intelligence and ethical practices. DLSU states the programme totals 187 units, comprising 178 academic units and 9 non-academic units, and publishes the blocks that make it up: general education, computing courses, separate mathematics and statistics blocks, data science and professional courses, professional electives, a required minor, a practicum and a thesis.
Two features of that structure are worth copying into your own comparison checklist.
Mathematics and statistics are separated and both are substantial. In a serious data science degree, statistics is not a single service course. If a programme's statistics content is one three-unit subject, it is a computing degree wearing a data science name.
There is a required minor. Data science is applied to a domain, and a programme that forces you to develop one is preparing you for how the work is actually staffed.
The University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines publishes a Bachelor of Science in Data Science through its computing college, describing it as an interdisciplinary programme spanning mathematics, statistics, machine learning, databases and other branches of computer science.
The University of the East publishes a Bachelor of Science in Data Science jointly offered by its College of Computer Studies and Systems and its College of Engineering in Caloocan, covering data and the processes, algorithms and systems for collecting, refining, storing and analysing it.
How to Compare Two Data Science Programmes
Without a CMO to check against, use these instead:
- Statistics depth. Look for probability, inferential statistics, regression and experimental design as separate courses, not one survey subject.
- Programming and data engineering. Databases and SQL, data structures, and something covering pipelines and large-data handling rather than only spreadsheet-scale work.
- Machine learning taught after the mathematics, not before it. A curriculum that puts a machine learning course in second year, ahead of linear algebra and statistics, is teaching tool use.
- A domain component. A required minor, a set of domain electives, or a track. Data science without a domain is unemployable in practice.
- A real practicum. Ask where students are placed and what they did there.
- Who teaches it. Data science programmes are often staffed jointly by mathematics, statistics and computing faculty. Ask which department owns the programme and who actually teaches the core.
What the Missing PSG Means in Practice
Three consequences worth planning around.
Transferring is riskier. When two schools both run a CHED-prescribed programme, their curricula share a mandated core, so credited subjects transfer more predictably. With no PSG, two BS Data Science curricula can diverge widely, and units you have already paid for may not map cleanly if you move. If there is any chance you will transfer, ask both schools how they handle it before you enrol, not after.
Programme authority is school-specific and worth verifying. CHED grants authority to operate a programme to a particular institution. A school offering a well-established BSIT does not automatically have authority for a data science degree. Ask to see the authority covering the exact programme you are enrolling in.
Credential questions land on you. For licensed degrees, the board exam answers "is this graduate qualified?" For a degree with neither a licence nor a national standard, that question is answered by what you can show. Start a public portfolio in second year: cleaned datasets, notebooks, a reproducible analysis, a small model with the reasoning written up. It compounds, and it is the only thing that travels between employers.
The Alternative Route: A Standardised Degree Plus Data Electives
If the absence of a national standard bothers you, there is a conservative path that many working data professionals took.
BS Computer Science under CMO No. 25, s. 2015 has a nationally prescribed 146-unit minimum, an additional mathematics requirement that BSIS and BSIT do not carry, and a required thesis. Its recommended electives include computational science and intelligent systems. See our BS Computer Science guide.
BS Information Systems under the same order carries data mining and business intelligence in its recommended elective list, plus the business domain courses that give analytics work its context. Our BS Information Systems guide covers it.
BS Mathematics or BS Statistics gives the strongest quantitative foundation, with programming picked up alongside. Our BS Mathematics guide covers that route.
None of these is worse preparation than a data science degree. What a dedicated BS Data Science buys you is a curriculum already assembled in the right order, provided the school assembled it well.
Careers After BS Data Science
The University of the East lists the following career paths for its programme: data scientist, data analyst, quantitative analyst, big data analyst, research and development computing professional, systems analyst, data engineer, machine learning engineer, big data developer, and data quality assurance specialist.
In the Philippine market, the employers behind those titles are concentrated in banking and financial services, telecommunications, business process outsourcing and shared services, e-commerce and logistics, health, and government statistical and planning work. A large share of higher-paid work serves offshore clients, which is why remote and hybrid arrangements are common in this field.
We are not publishing salary ranges here. There is no Philippine occupational wage series specific to data scientists that we would cite, and figures circulating online for the role are usually self-reported and unverifiable.
Is BS Data Science Right for You?
- You must be willing to do the mathematics. Statistics, linear algebra and probability are the substance of this field, and no library or framework removes the need to understand them.
- You will need a domain. Finance, health, logistics, marketing, public policy: pick one during the degree rather than after.
- The absence of a board exam cuts both ways. Nobody can block you from the field, and nothing certifies you either. Build a portfolio from second year.
- Check the specific programme, not the field's reputation. With no national PSG, the variance between schools is wider here than in almost any other computing degree.
