BS Agribusiness Management: Course and Careers

TL;DR: BS Agribusiness is a four-year degree governed by CHED Memorandum Order No. 24, series of 2007, which sums the curriculum to 172 units built from 27 units of fundamental agriculture, 21 units of business core, 39 units of agribusiness majors, a 6-unit practicum and a 3-unit thesis or field study. And there is now a board exam route: RA 12215, the Philippine Agriculturists Act of 2025, names "BS in Agribusiness Management" among the agriculture-related degrees qualified to sit the Agriculturist Licensure Examination.

Agribusiness is the degree for people who want to work in food and agriculture without spending four years on plant pathology. It is a business degree with real agricultural science in it — enough to make you useful to a bank lending against a harvest, a food company sourcing from farmers, or a cooperative trying to get product to market.

The licensure position changed in 2025, and most material online has not caught up. That is the part worth reading carefully.

The CHED Policy

CMO No. 24, series of 2007 is titled "Policies and Standards for Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness (BSAB) Program." Its stated rationale is direct: various higher education institutions "offer undergraduate agribusiness and agribusiness related degree programs with varying requirements, thus producing graduates with varied competencies," so the standards exist to make those programmes comparable.

The order describes the objective as producing "educated well-rounded professionals in agribusiness capable of meeting the national and global needs for highly trained managers, academics, researchers and extensionists and entrepreneurs," and names agriculture, business, management, economics, accountancy and public administration as allied fields.

A naming note: CHED's degree name in the order is Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness. Many schools, including UP Los Baños, offer it as BS Agribusiness Management. RA 12215 uses the "Agribusiness Management" wording. Ask any school which exact programme name appears on the diploma and which CHED government recognition covers it.

CMO No. 24, s. 2007 is an older-generation policy written before the K-12 reform and before CHED's current general education curriculum. Schools implement it alongside the newer general education rules, so real curricula differ from the 2007 tables. Confirm the current checklist with the department.

The Curriculum

CMO No. 24, s. 2007 sums the curriculum as follows:

ComponentUnits
General Education59
Fundamental Agriculture27
Core courses21
Major courses39
Practicum6
Thesis, special problem or field study3
Elective3
NSTP(6)
Physical Education(8)
Total as stated in the order172

One important caveat on that table. The 59-unit general education block reflects the pre-2013 general education curriculum. CHED's current general education curriculum, set by CMO No. 20, series of 2013, has a minimum of 36 units, and it is what schools implement today. So a current BS Agribusiness checklist will normally show a lower total than 172. Read the school's actual checklist and do not treat 172 as the number you will take.

Fundamental agriculture (27 units)

This is the block that separates agribusiness from a general business degree:

  • Crop Science I — Fundamentals of Crop Science
  • Crop Science II — Fundamentals of Horticulture
  • Crop Protection I — Entomology
  • Crop Protection II — Plant Pathology
  • Animal Science I — Introduction to Animal Science
  • Animal Science II — Introduction to Livestock and Poultry Production
  • Soil Science — Principles of Soil Science
  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Agricultural Extension and Communication

Core courses (21 units)

Principles of Accounting; Introduction to Agribusiness Management; Intermediate Microeconomic Theory I; Introduction to Human Behavior in Organization; Introduction to Management Science; Introduction to Entrepreneurship; Concepts and Dynamics of Management.

Major courses (39 units)

Managerial Accounting; Introduction to Marketing Management; Business Law; Introduction to Financial Management; Agribusiness Research Methods; Introduction to Production and Operations Management; Introduction to Investment Management; Introduction to International Marketing; Introduction to Managerial Economics; Introduction to Project Feasibility Study / Project Benefit Monitoring and Evaluation; Introduction to Strategic Management; Introduction to Organization and Management of Small Business; Introduction to Personnel Management.

Practicum, thesis and electives

Practicum is 6 units and sits in the second semester of fourth year in the order's sample programme. A special problem, thesis or field study accounts for 3 units. The 3-unit elective may be taken in foreign language, food processing, information technology or fisheries.

The curriculum description in the order is worth quoting because it explains the logic: the programme "is systems-oriented emphasizing on the interactions of all activities and factors affecting the manufacture and distribution of farm supplies; production activities on the farm; and the storage, processing, and distribution of farm commodities and items made from them, locally and globally."

That value-chain framing is the actual discipline. You are not being trained to grow anything. You are being trained to understand and manage the chain around it.

The Board Exam Position, Updated

This is where most online material is out of date.

The Professional Regulation Commission supervises a Professional Regulatory Board of Agriculture. There is no separate board for agribusiness. The relevant examination is the Agriculturist Licensure Examination.

Republic Act No. 12215, the Philippine Agriculturists Act, was enacted in 2025 and reorganised the profession. Its Section 4(c) defines agriculture-related degrees as:

"courses authorized and defined by the Board for purposes of qualifying for the agriculturist licensure examination and for registration as agriculturists without examination, such as BS in Agriculture, BS in Agricultural and Applied Economics, BS in Agribusiness Management, BS in Agricultural Biotechnology, BS in Agricultural Chemistry, and other agriculture-related courses that may hereafter be identified or recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Board"

BS Agribusiness Management is named. Section 15 sets the educational qualification for applicants as "a holder of Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture or any agriculture-related degree from a school, college, or university recognized by the government."

So the honest answer to "is there a board exam for agribusiness?" is: there is one you may take, not one you must take.

What the exam covers

RA 12215 Section 14 sets six foundation subjects:

  1. Crop Science
  2. Animal Science
  3. Soil Science
  4. Crop Protection
  5. Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Agri-entrepreneurship
  6. Agricultural Extension and Communication

Look at that list against the curriculum above. Four of the six subjects map onto the 27-unit fundamental agriculture block — a single 3-unit course each in most cases. Only one subject sits in the agribusiness major itself. An agribusiness graduate sitting the ALE is competing against BS Agriculture graduates who spent most of four years on those four subjects.

That is not a reason to skip the exam. It is a reason to decide early. If you intend to take the ALE, use your electives, thesis topic and practicum placement to shore up the production-science side, and treat the fundamental agriculture courses as exam preparation rather than as requirements to survive.

Because RA 12215 is recent, the new Board's implementing rules and its own list of recognised agriculture-related courses are the controlling detail. Verify your eligibility with PRC in writing before you build a plan around it. Our agriculturist board exam guide covers the exam mechanics, and PRC board exam requirements covers the documents. PRC publishes each cycle's schedule on its own site, and the dates move.

Why the licence matters even though it is optional

For private-sector agribusiness work — trading, sales, supply chain, agri-lending, food company sourcing — nobody will ask for a PRC licence. For government agriculturist positions at the Department of Agriculture and in local government units, the position's qualification standards usually require registration. Passing a PRC board exam also confers civil service eligibility under RA 1080, which is a real advantage in the government hiring queue.

Careers

CMO No. 24, s. 2007 lists these as the professions and occupations for graduates:

  • Corporate planners
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Business consultants
  • Business managers
  • Sales representatives
  • Credit analysts
  • Teachers
  • Researchers
  • Extensionists

In today's job market that translates into agri-input and agrochemical sales and territory management, agricultural lending and credit analysis at banks and cooperatives, procurement and sourcing for food manufacturers, supply chain and logistics for perishables, cooperative and farmer-organisation management, government agriculture and trade offices, and running an agri-enterprise of your own.

The credit analyst and agri-lending route is the one that most rewards the specific combination this degree gives you. Assessing a loan against a standing crop needs someone who understands both a cash flow statement and a pest outbreak, and there are not many degrees producing that person.

If entrepreneurship is the plan, our BS Entrepreneurship guide covers the general-purpose alternative, and BSBA degree guide covers the business administration route.

Who Should Take This Course

It fits students who:

  • Come from a farming or agri-trading family and want to professionalise the business
  • Want a business career but in a sector with real physical output rather than services
  • Are willing to do fieldwork, since practicum and extension work are not office-based
  • Can carry both quantitative business subjects and laboratory-flavoured agriculture courses

It does not fit students who want a purely corporate, city-based business career — a general business degree is more efficient for that — or students who genuinely want to be scientists, for whom BS Agriculture or an agricultural biotechnology programme is the better route.

The ABM strand is the most natural senior high school preparation for the business half; see our ABM strand guide. STEM students adapt easily too. Neither is a hard requirement.

Tuition is set by each school. Many agribusiness programmes are offered at state universities and colleges, which fall under free tuition arrangements for eligible students — our free tuition guide covers how that works. Field trips, practicum-related travel and laboratory fees are usually charged separately, so ask for the full schedule of fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BS Agribusiness Management?

It is a four-year degree that combines agricultural science with business management, aimed at the value chain from farm inputs through production, storage, processing and distribution of farm commodities. CHED Memorandum Order No. 24, series of 2007 sets the policies and standards under the degree name Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness; many schools, including UP Los Baños, use the name BS Agribusiness Management.

Is there a board exam for BS Agribusiness Management?

Yes, and this changed recently. Republic Act No. 12215, the Philippine Agriculturists Act signed in 2025, defines agriculture-related degrees as including "BS in Agribusiness Management" for purposes of qualifying for the agriculturist licensure examination. So an agribusiness graduate can sit the Agriculturist Licensure Examination. It is not compulsory for private-sector work, but it matters for government agriculturist posts.

What subjects are on the agriculturist licensure examination?

RA 12215 sets six foundation subjects: Crop Science; Animal Science; Soil Science; Crop Protection; Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness and Agri-entrepreneurship; and Agricultural Extension and Communication. Four of the six are agricultural science subjects, which is why the fundamental agriculture block in the agribusiness curriculum matters if you plan to take the exam.

How many units is BS Agribusiness?

CMO No. 24, s. 2007 sums the curriculum to 172 units: 59 units of general education, 27 units of fundamental agriculture courses, 21 units of core courses, 39 units of major courses, 6 units of practicum, 3 units of special problem, thesis or field study, and 3 units of electives, plus NSTP and PE. Note that the 59-unit general education block predates CHED's current general education curriculum, so schools now implementing CMO No. 20, s. 2013 will show a lower total.

What agriculture subjects are in the agribusiness curriculum?

CMO No. 24, s. 2007 prescribes 27 units of fundamental agriculture: Fundamentals of Crop Science, Fundamentals of Horticulture, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Introduction to Animal Science, Introduction to Livestock and Poultry Production, Principles of Soil Science, Agricultural Engineering, and Agricultural Extension and Communication.

What is the difference between BS Agribusiness and BS Agriculture?

BS Agriculture is a production-science degree — the depth is in crops, animals, soils and crop protection. BS Agribusiness keeps a working foundation in those subjects but spends most of the curriculum on management, marketing, finance, accounting and entrepreneurship applied to the agricultural value chain. Both are recognised as agriculture-related degrees under RA 12215.

What is the difference between BS Agribusiness and a business degree?

A general business degree gives you no agricultural science at all. The 27 units of fundamental agriculture in the agribusiness curriculum are what let you talk credibly to a farmer, assess a crop loan, or judge a post-harvest problem. If you have no intention of working in the food and agriculture sector, a general business administration degree is the more flexible choice.

Is there a practicum in BS Agribusiness?

Yes. CMO No. 24, s. 2007 prescribes 6 units of practicum plus 3 units of special problem, thesis or field study. In the sample programme of study, the practicum sits in the second semester of fourth year. Placement arrangements and hours are set by the school, so ask where students are actually placed.
